Interview: ĦVMNS

ĦVMNS is Melancholic, Dramatic Indie Pop London based duo composed by Guus and Moa. They have recently released their first music video Dirt + Grimes and we from Youthgasm had the chance to chat with them about all things ĦVMNS!

Hi, guys. Can you please give us a little bio on the band? Like, where did you guys meet and why decided to play together?

Hi, Victoria! We first met at the Single launch for a hot new act in this basement venue in Kensington London called AAA. It’s an ace club for new music and showcases etc. Guus had produced their song and he came to check it out. Moa was singing backing vocals for one of the support acts.

Guus had laid down the sound for what would become HVMNS but had been looking for somebody to write with and someone with a powerful distinct voice. After an initial chat and introduction, we got together for the first time in the studio and wrote Dirt and Grime! I think we both realised that we were on exactly the same musical and creative wavelength which is rare.

You have just released your first music video and I think that’s the first form most people have primary heard from you, how’s your audience respond to that?

Yes, we have never released anything before. Dirt and grime is the first thing people will have seen or heard from us. We think it’s exciting when something hits the airways and you are wondering where that came from!
It wasn’t a planned decision. HVMNS was born in the studio so our natural home is there. The video is an extension of that. Guus had seen Luke Mann dance 4 years ago when Luke was 13 and already a star then. We were ecstatic he wanted to be involved. We love to dance, we love visuals, we love abstract and we love art but we also love melodies and pop songs. We have had some amazing responses from Fans, industry peeps, our mums and dads!
In general people are surprised we came out of nowhere, which is ace!

What other forms of being heard are you guys planning to go forward?

We have done a few gigs around London to get ourselves comfortable on stage. We will be playing more and more while writing new stuff. The plan is to just follow our hearts and use the available outlets to express ourselves. Social media, radio, visual. Anything really. We are thinking about doing some exclusive HVMNS screen prints! Wouldn’t that be cool!

There aren’t a lot of your songs out there, hopefully, that will change soon as your sound is great. What do you think is the next step?

Lol! Yeah, that is kinda weird having only one song out there. We do have more songs, though!! Actually while We are having this interview, we are writing in the studio, Moa just laid-down another chorus idea for a new song which is very exciting. We are planning to have it ready for our next gig at the Looking Glass on Nov 26th.
Because Guus plays everything, it always takes a while to finish!
So, the plan is more songs, more gigs, more new videos. We have a kick ass idea for a new video!

How your concert experience is like, in your perspective, and how have it changed since your first show?

It hasn’t really changed. We just want it to grab you. It’s just the 2 of us at the moment of stage but It’s big and bassy and melancholic, powerful and mesmerising. (Well that is the idea at least!). Eventually the show with include full band with a large string section.

What are your biggest musical influences nowadays?

There is so much great music out there and each has got it’s different influences on us and our music.
Bjork for her quirkiness, Florence for her songs and sounds, Arcade Fire for their coolness, Jack White for his riffs. But also older artists like Elvis and Velvet Underground. Of course, we also listen to highly successfully artists like Taylor swift and Demi Lovato!

Sounds like the perfect combination! As an artist, what are the things you stand for, at this point of your career/life?

We just wanna do cool stuff and be creative. I guess ultimately express ourselves through music initially but other visual forms too.
We want HVMNS to stand for something with a bit of gravity as there is so much fluffy stuff out there, which we also listen to, of course, but we want HVMNS to be a bit more than that.

How do you expect to influence people with your music and persona?

We hope that our lyrics and music make you feel a certain way. Maybe it can trigger some deeper thoughts but we still want it to be a good tune you can sing along to!
It would be great if we could inspire other peeps like we have been inspired by our influences but with one song that might be a bit of wishful thinking!

Is there anything you would like to add?

Thank you for inviting us to have a chat. The site is great and highlights issues that are important. So, thank you for letting us be part of that and listen to our music and enjoying it!
Much love from us. Kisses from Guus and Moa!
